Last year, star Jude Law stated he had no concerns about backlash for portraying Vladimir Putin in a new film. The movie, however, may align so closely with the mythologized version promoted by official channels that, domestically, it reads as a compliment rather than a critique.

The Manufactured Strongman

Over a long period, the Russian political apparatus and its pop-culture machine have collaborated to forge a made-to-measure version of the president. This character is a political superhero without age or mistakes, an ex-intelligence officer reimagined as a local 007 who always knows beyond what he shows.

Screen-Based Support

A notable instance is a television show launched last October, directed by a Kremlin supporter. Its main character is a invented blue-eyed lieutenant colonel inexplicably chosen to “rescue” Russia from disorder. While he is called Mikhail, the implication is unmistakable: the savior must be a familiar security officer.

International depictions often end up reinforcing this same narrative rather than undercutting it. An adaptation based on a bestselling satirical novel aims to subvert the leader's mythology by framing him as a symptom but as a consequence, moving the narrative weight to the political machinery surrounding him.

The Fable of the Hesitant President

In the film, Putin is shown as having been picked by powerful oligarchs to stabilise the nation because he is “young, athletic and a spy”. They visit him and all but beg him to become president. His response is that he would rather govern from the background, desiring enduring influence.

This narrative is a key piece of state propaganda: the cool, reluctant strategist shaped by destiny. Historically, none of this ever happened.

The Truth Behind the Selection

Nobody actually pleaded with Putin to accept the role. The presidency was in essence a selection process with many candidates. Central to the selection stood an influential oligarch from the previous administration who planned to control the state in practice.

• His list featured several politicians, among them an opposition leader subsequently assassinated and a former spy chief.
• Per a journalist who studied Putin’s biography, the future president simply fitted the necessary criteria: obedient, from the security services, and not a communist or a liberal.
• A businessman close to the events stated the key criterion was controllability and loyalty, not leadership.

Building the 007 Persona

Analysts concur that the image of Putin as a master operative was constructed retrospectively. Stories about his “recruitment work” in Dresden do not stand up to scrutiny. Fundamentally, he was an administrator and routine duties, a low-level clerk not engaged in actual agent work.

Interestingly, the shift to depicting him as a “spy” could partly have been triggered by Daniel Craig’s arrival as 007. His harder version prompted local outlets and social media to make comparisons with Putin. Edited images replacing Craig’s face with Putin’s appeared on city centers, feeding the increasing trend to see him as a local secret agent.

A Diplomatic Opportunity?

With Jude Law, an star well-liked by viewers there, the authorities will not miss the opportunity to frame his casting as a small victory. Its omission of public dissent, the opposition, or key figures from its narrative, despite covering the past decade, is a pleasant bonus for official messaging.

Domestically, Putin is frequently an omnipotent figure who remains unseen on screen. His influence is hinted at through portraits or orders from on high. Now, he finally acquires a famous actor's visage—one that may inadvertently echo the very myths it perhaps aims to question.
